- Balms & Butters: Melt a small amount between fingertips and apply to dry patches or as an overnight treatment.

- Safety: Always patch test new formulas and avoid direct sunlight if using citrus-based ingredients.
Skin Science 101
Mastering the biology of your skin is fundamental for intentional skincare. Review our comprehensive analysis of cell structure, moisture transfer, and why stabilizers matter in natural formulas.
Skin Structure
**Skin Structure**
Your skin is a living organ made of three main layers that work together to protect you.
• **Epidermis:** The outer layer. It acts like a waterproof shield, keeps germs out, holds in moisture, and gives your skin its color. This is also where your skin barrier lives.
• **Dermis:** The middle, support layer. It contains collagen and elastin (for firmness and bounce), blood vessels (for nutrients), hair follicles, and nerve endings that let you feel touch, heat, and pain.
• **Hypodermis:** The deeper fatty layer. It cushions you from bumps, helps keep you warm, and anchors the skin to muscles and bone.
Understanding these layers helps explain why some ingredients work on the surface, while others are designed to support deeper comfort and resilience over time.
Hydration Systems & Care
**Hydration Systems & Care**
Healthy skin needs both water inside the cells and a strong barrier to keep that water from escaping.
• **Hydration:** Humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin pull water into the upper layers of the skin, helping it feel plump and comfortable.
• **Barrier support:** Lipids such as ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids help seal that water in and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL)—the slow evaporation of water from your skin into the air.
When TEWL is too high, skin can feel tight, rough, or flaky even if you’re using rich products.
Simple habits—like applying products on damp skin, using lukewarm (not hot) water, and avoiding harsh scrubs—support both hydration and your barrier so skin stays soft, bouncy, and less reactive.
Important Notes
Natural ingredients can cause irritation
Synthetic ingredients are man made in laboratories. This does not mean they are automatically harmful take hyaluronic acid for example.
"chemical free" isn't something to necicarilly look for in products considering everything is a chemical. instead make sure there are no harmful chemicals.
Not every botanical extract is the same: their are multiple methods of extraction.
Barrier Roles & Density
**Barrier Roles & Density**
Your skin barrier is the outermost part of the epidermis. It works like a brick wall: skin cells are the “bricks,” and a mix of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids are the “mortar.”
• When the barrier is strong, it holds moisture in, keeps irritants and pollutants out, and helps your microbiome stay balanced.
• When it’s weakened—by over-exfoliating, harsh cleansers, strong actives, or extreme weather—you may notice dryness, redness, stinging, or more frequent breakouts.
Barrier thickness and density vary across the body (for example, eyelids are much thinner than the palms), which is why some areas are more delicate.
Supporting these key lipids and treating skin gently helps your barrier stay flexible, calm, and protective over the long term.
Preservatives
**Safety Standards**
Water-based products (like creams, lotions, and gels) need a real preservation system to stay safe. Without it, bacteria, yeast, and mold can grow—even if the product looks and smells normal.
**The Reason why products have water is because it's key in hydrating your skin. If you applied oils or balms it locks in whatever moisture you have, if your skin is not hydrated then it will keep your skin dry.
• **Preservatives:** Ingredients such as sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, benzyl alcohol, or phenoxyethanol (in some formulas) are used to protect against microbes.
• **Boosters & helpers:** Glyceryl caprylate, pentylene glycol, and sodium phytate can support the main preservative, make the environment less friendly to microbes, and help the system work more effectively.
• **pH & packaging:** Keeping the formula in the right pH range and using closed or airless packaging helps the preservation system do its job.
**Oil-only products usually don’t need the same kind of antimicrobial preservative, but they can still oxidize, so antioxidants like tocopherol (vitamin E) are often added.
“Natural” doesn’t automatically mean safer. What matters most is that the full formula is properly preserved and tested so it stays clean and gentle for your skin.
Key Note: Products that do not have water don't usually need preservatives, although it won't have water which is key for the skin.
